С внешней стороны гарнитуры расположена большая глянцевая кнопка с логотипом компании. Сбоку от неё находится сетка микрофона. К слову, данная модель получила два микрофона (для более четкой передачи голоса и отсеивания ненужных шумов).

С внутренней стороны на наушнике располагаются два микромагнита для крепления в кейсе, два позолоченных контакта для зарядки, а также индикатор приближения. Во время использования гарнитура автоматически определяет, когда она надета и когда снимается. Во втором случае воспроизведение музыки или видео ставится на паузу. Данную функцию можно отключить в настройках приложения, о котором мы поговорим позже.

В комплекте к гарнитуре идут две пары амбушюров разного размера. Они упакованы весьма необычным образом — помещены в блистере, почти как таблетки. Эти насадки снимаются и надеваются на гарнитуру тоже необычно: ногтем подцепляется силиконовый корпус амбушюры, а затем, как по направляющей, снимается со звуковода. Они занимают примерно треть самого наушника и сидят очень надежно.

Для переноски, хранения и зарядки гарнитуры предусмотрен кейс. Он способен продлить жизнедеятельность наушников до 13 часов, в то время как сами наушники работают от одного заряда 6,5 часа на среднем уровне громкости. На корпусе чехла имеется единственная кнопка, при нажатии на которую происходит открытие подпружиненной крышки, а также сопряжение с вашим устройством. Сверху (на крышке) выдавлен логотип компании, а в нижней части корпуса расположен разъем Micro-USB.

Крепятся наушники за счет сильных магнитов, которые не позволяют им случайно выпасть из чехла. При этом не требуется длительного времени на то, чтобы подобрать нужное положение внутри чехла. Достаточно просто поднести его к гнезду, а далее магнит сам правильно его установит. Быстро и удобно!

Также в комплект поставки входит бумажная документация и короткий провод для зарядки от 220 В.

По сравнению с BackBeat PRO 5100 модель FIT 3200 имеет яркую бирюзовую расцветку. Кнопки являются глянцевыми и имеют зеленый оттенок. Они поддерживают управление как нажатием, так и касанием. Гладкую поверхность украшает логотип компании, а сбоку от него расположен индикатор оповещений и заряда. Для более надежной фиксации в ухе во время занятий спортом в конструкции корпуса предусмотрена силиконовая заушина. Приблизительно с середины своей длины на нее нанесена треугольная текстура.

С внутренней стороны находится необычного вида амбушюра с заходной петлей. В комплекте есть сменки двух типов и размеров — у самых маленьких нет вышеописанной петли.

Насадки снимаются и надеваются тоже нетривиальным образом: путем проворота вокруг своей оси по направляющим и отщёлкивания. За насадкой располагаются два позолоченных контакта для зарядки и на первый взгляд незаметный микрофон.

Для переноски и зарядки данных наушников нужен кейс соответствующих размеров. И Plantronics предлагает интересный для этого вариант. Чехол имеет черное прорезиненное покрытие. От царапин оно защищает не так хорошо, как если бы это был обычный пластик. И с учетом того, что наушники изначально позиционировались для занятий спортом, такое решение достаточно спорное. Крышка чехла открывается путем расстегивания молнии. Внутри наушники закрепляются плотно, прилегая внутри своих гнезд. Между ними расположена информационная кнопка заряда батареи, а над ней установлены световые индикаторы в количестве 4 штук. Для зарядки чехла с обратной стороны расположен порт Micro-USB. Кейс способен продлить работу наушников до 16 часов, в то время как сама гарнитура работает 8 часов на громкости выше средней.

Чехол достаточно вместительный, поэтому на крышке находится кармашек. В него можно положить зарядный провод, сменные насадки или что-то еще подходящего размера.

Final verdict

If you don’t want to drop $350 (£290, AU$500) on the Bose QuietComfort 35 or $400 (£330 or AU$700) on Sony’s flagship MDR-1000X, the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 should be on the top of your shopping list. Sure, the Bose still offers better noise cancellation and Sony offers a bit better sound, but the Plantronics do just about everything else right. 

In terms of value, the BackBeat Pro 2 are basically a steal. With the BackBeat Pro 2, you’re getting travel headphones with incredible battery life, supreme comfort, the ability to pair two device at once and, most importantly, good sound quality for the cost.

Воспроизведение, звонки и шумоподавление

Правой рукой легко нащупывается тумблер включения. Если его потянуть вверх и подержать пару секунд, то наушники перейдут в режим сопряжения. Вся правая чашка — одна большая кнопка, отвечающая за прием звонка. Она же помогает понять, какой остался заряд и что к наушникам подключено. На торце левой чашки еще один переключатель, активирующий и выключающий активное шумопдавление и режим «Open Mic», при котором включаются микрофоны для передачи окружающих звуков. Это удобно, если нужно поговорить, или если вы гуляете по оживленной улице. Вся площадь левой чашки отдана под панель управления музыкой. В центре большая кнопка «Play-Pause», дальше кнопки, отвечающие за перемотку назад-вперед, на этом же кольце расположен NFC датчик, он позволяет быстро и без лишних движений подключить наушники к смартфону. И наконец — внешнее кольцо, на котором реализовано управление громкостью. Это кольцо имеет ограниченный ход по кругу, движение интуитивно понятное и реализовано отлично. Еще тут можно найти кнопку мутирования микрофона во время разговора по телефону, micro-USB для зарядки и 3,5-мм джек на для кабеля. Наушники можно слушать и просто по кабелю, что очень удобно.

Сенсор для остановки воспроизведения

Есть еще парочка интересных фишек. Например, сенсор, определяющий надеты ли наушники в данный момент. Если их снять во время прослушивания музыки, то проигрывание остановится, если надеть, то воспроизведение продолжится. Удобно, но иногда работает очень странно. Например, при просмотре видео на YouTube сенсор не срабатывает. А если наушники подключены к ноутбуку и вы смотрите YouTube, то сняв и надев их вы запустите стандартный плеер, который будет играть вместе с видео. Технология интересная, но польза от нее иногда стремится к нулю. Однако, в случае с музыкой и плеером в смартфоне все работает хорошо.

Bluetooth-соединение

Надо отметить и отличный радиус действия в режиме Bluetooth-подключения. Там, где любые другие наушники теряют соединение, BackBeat даже до половины своего радиуса не доходят. Радиус действия однозначно в несколько раз больше чем у тех же Bose. Plantronics обещают активное подключение до 100 метров на открытом пространстве. В офисе или квартире можно спокойно ходить из комнаты в комнату и подключение всегда будет стабильным.

Extra features & Battery life

One of the main selling points of these headphones is active noise cancelling. The feature in itself is just above acceptable, removing only a very small part of ambient noise. It removes bass frequencies with good efficiency, though, so I may say it does its job. BackBeat Pro 2’s weakness is the fact that passive isolation is non-existent. When I wear them I can hear the exact same sounds as when I do not wear them; there is no audible difference in volume either. This makes the noise cancelling almost useless, as you will continue to hear all the sounds around you, they will just be a bit muffled up. Bose’s QuietComfort 35, which I had a brief chance of trying (see also: Bose QuietComfort 35 review), seem to be very distant.

Update: Reddit user /u/jodv notes that diminished passive isolation may be due to me (and him) having larger ears and therefore having earcups not completely surrounding them, making sound creep in. This may be a good explanation as to why passive isolation is not on par with other headphones.

If I had to choose a headphone for a noisy environment (e.g. open-space office) I would not turn to the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2, as they cannot guarantee the needed noise reduction. To put things in perspective, I find the Plantronics Voyager Focus UC, which are on-ear headphones and are not made with isolation in mind, offer a better seal. Even the Bowers & Wilkins P3 Series 2 have better passive isolation!

There is an “open mic” mode, which should allow the user to hear ambient sounds – an option which is particularly useful on public transport or while walking in cities. Since the headphones already let all the ambients sounds in, though, this mode seems to be totally useless. In addition to that, it makes high-frequency sounds so sharp they are very annoying and caused me fatigue in mere minutes.

What I really enjoy about Plantronics headphones is that they’re actually smart. They are packed with sensors so they can react to the user’s actions: as an example, they automatically pause music when you remove them and play it when you put them on again. You can pair them with up to two different devices, so that you can link them to both your PC and your smartphone and use the same headset to manage music and calls. A voice also informs you of battery level, connection status and so on.

Bluetooth 4 EDR is included and it supports the aptX codec, too. That means sound quality will be noticeably better with compatible devices. As the list includes more or less all of the flagship phones from recent years and a vast array of less-expensive devices from most manufacturers, this should grant broad compatibility.

Battery life is advertised at a staggering 24 hours. Reality is not far from the claims, though, and the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 actually deliver on that promise. Of course battery life is dependant on a lot of different factors, including listening volume, Bluetooth signal quality, ANC and so on, so your mileage may vary – but it will probably be quite similar to the figures the company provides.

We liked

For $200 (£230, AU$250), it’s hard to fault anything about the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2. The looks might not be for everyone, and the bass-heavy sound won’t please audiophiles but the BackBeat Pro 2 does just about everything right for travel headphones. 

The headphones’ staggering 24-hour battery life delivers and is a killer feature for travelers who can’t be tethered to an outlet, and while the active noise cancellation isn’t the best in the industry, it’s still very good at muffling the sound of the noisy, sleep-depriving outside world. 

It’s clear Plantronics was listening to user feedback when redesigning the BackBeat Pro 2. Just about every quibble we had about the original has been addressed – and, even more incredibly, despite all those changes Plantronics’ latest pair of cans launched at a cheaper price point than the original headphones.

Controls and Sensors

The BackBeat Pro 2 SEs still have all the smart features I’ve come to know and love. For instance, pressing the right ear cup still answers or ignores incoming phone calls. The right-mounted power button still pulls double-duty; you can initiate Bluetooth pairing by holding the switch upward for 2 seconds.

Directly below the power switch is the bright-red OpenMic button, which allows you to adjust how much ambient noise enters your active-noise-cancelled bubble. I activated this mode when I was walking home so I could remain aware of my surroundings, especially while crossing streets with bike lanes.

The left ear cup does a lot of the heavy lifting, with the center button acting as the play/pause control. A quick press on the left or right side of the center ring will skip forward or backward on the track, respectively. The integrated NFC chip also resides in the left cup. Some of my favorite features, the smart sensors, are embedded into the plush lining of the ear cup. They pause your music as soon as you remove the cup from your ear.

Микрофон

Оценка микрофона значительно отличается у разных пользователей. Кто-то отмечает, что он работает просто отлично, даже в шумном офисе все слышно собеседнику. Но есть и пользователи, утверждающие, что наушники Plantronics BackBeat PRO не могут использоваться как гарнитура – звук голоса гасится посторонними шумами, что мешает воспринимать речь собеседника.

Проблема в том, что микрофон не выдвижной, он встроен в чашку. Поэтому располагается значительно выше рта, прямо возле уха. Соответственно, чтобы разговаривать по телефону, нужно повышать голос, четко старательно проговаривать слова.

То же касается и общения в игровом чате, если геймер играет не один в комнате. Микрофон захватывает щелчки клавиш, посторонние звуки, что может отвлекать от игры соратников и раздражать.

Зато в работе с компьютерной телефонией микрофон показал себя лучшим образом. В домашней обстановке или в личном офисе с помощью этой гарнитуры можно проводить онлайн-уроки или самостоятельно проходить курсы.

Эргономика, звучание и микрофон

BackBeat PRO 5100 имеют очень миниатюрные габариты: размер динамика составляет 5,8 мм, а вес — всего 5,8 г. Гарнитура комфортно сидит в ухе и при этом не глубоко проникает в ушной канал. Со временем перестаешь их замечать и забываешь об их существовании

Звучанием мы остались довольны. Кодек SBC показал себя с лучшей стороны, подарив при прослушивании драйвовый бас, чистое звучание голоса, а также слегка завышенные нижние и средние частоты. Но для полноты ощущений стоит подобрать насадки необходимого размера. Они сильно влияют на звучание.

Наушники защищены по технологии IPX4 и способны противостоять дождю и большой влажности. Но прямого попадания воды они выдержать неспособны. Если вы решили пойти в бассейн или принять душ, то гарнитуру лучше отложить в сторону.

BackBeat FIT 3200 имеют большие габариты и вес. Размер динамика составляет 13,5 мм, а масса — 13 г. В ухе они сидят очень уверенно и надежно. Правда, за счет нерегулируемой длины заушины будут оптимальны не для каждого человека.

Наушники обладают неплохой пассивной шумоизоляцией, и если хотите остаться с мыслями наедине в людном месте или в общественном транспорте, то данное устройство отлично сыграет свою роль. А если, наоборот, хотите слышать одним ухом происходящее вокруг, то гарнитура поддерживает попеременную работу — в то время, как один наушник находится в ухе, второй покоится в чехле.

К качеству звука претензий нет. Объемные и мощные басы, глубокое и насыщенное звучание инструментальных композиций и четкая передача голоса в хип-хоп треках. А вот к качеству микрофона и передаче голоса есть нарекания. Встроенный шумодав работает не всегда корректно. Во время звонка в людных местах собеседник жаловался на то, что съедаются начало или окончание слов. Функция Throughout тоже работает не так четко, как хотелось бы. Часть звуков пропадает и в них слышны металлические нотки.

BackBeat FIT 3200 защищены по технологии IP57 и способны выдерживать такие погодные явления, как дождь. Им не страшно даже погружение на 1 метр — правда, сигнал Bluetooth проходить сквозь воду не будет.

Critics

As of July 2019, Backbeat holds a rating of 69% based on 39 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator site.Rolling Stone liked how the film captured the early 60s period through its visual style and use of music. Movie critic Roger Ebert gave the film two out of four stars; although he thought the «dialogue has real wit» the film was let down because «it’s never able to convince us there’s a story there».

The Beatles and others

Paul McCartney said of the film:

Astrid Kirchherr praised the accuracy and detail of her relationship with Sutcliffe and the Beatles. The film received further positive responses from Julian Lennon, Pete Best, and Sutcliffe’s sister, Pauline, who said, «I still think the director did a fabulous job. It’s a good movie. If you like movies, it’s a great movie.»

Sound

The Backbeat Pro 2s have 40mm dynamic drivers. Their sound has a number of admirable elements, but is let down by bass that drags audio quality down a league below their peers.

Let’s start with the good points. The Backbeat Pro 2s are smooth and have an enjoyable soundfield. Like the best full-size headphones the sound is wide, seeming to come from around your ears rather than between them. It’s an immersive soundscape.

Detail is fairly good, with a decent amount of musical information delivered by the mids and treble without any harshness or abrasiveness making the Backbeat Pro 2s seem they’re trying too hard. The aim seems to be a smooth and easygoing sound, and it’s right on target.

This is a perfectly fine goal, but the Pro 2s trip over their own bass. The low end panders to the long-standing populist obsession with the stuff, but it goes a little too far.

Bass is soft and slow. There’s plenty of weight, but it’s leaden and manifests as a cloud of mid-bass that hangs over the fairly good detail in the higher registers like a smog haze over a city.

It reduces separation and transparency, ultimately weighing down the Plantronics and sapping their energy and dynamics. These could be very good-sounding headphones, but a couple of tuning choices mean they are only fair.

Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2: performance

The original BackBeat Pro headphones offered a fun, slightly bass heavy sound signature. Plantronics carried over this sound signature to the BackBeat Pro 2, which most users will probably find pleasing to the ears. 

Audiophiles will quibble about the overbearing bass but will be happy to know that using the BackBeat Pro 2 in wired mode tames the bass quite a bit.

We were pleasantly surprised to find ANC still works when playing music in wired mode, which means you can save a bit of battery when you don’t mind going wired for a period. A little added bass emphasis helps block out external noise so we can understand why Plantronics decided to go for a bass-heavy sound signature.

Highs are a bit rolled off, making them sound slightly veiled, but that’s actually preferable for long listening sessions since the highs won’t be fatiguing. Similarly, mids are good, but they can be muted by the heavy bass. Soundstage is average, so don’t expect an out-of-head listening experience. 

With active noise canceling enabled, we did notice a slight hiss when no music is playing. The Bose QC35 still offer the best noise cancellation in the industry but the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 can do an admirable job of blocking out noise.

Putting them to the test, the BackBeat Pro 2 dulled the deafening roar of the 777 jet engines on a flight from San Francisco to New York, helping us to keep our sanity as we attempted to get some sleep. The sound quality of the headphones wasn’t impacted by the active noise cancellation, which hasn’t always been the case with ANC headphones in the past. 

As for battery life, we were extremely impressed by the longevity of the BackBeat Pro 2. The original also offered incredible 24-hour battery life but the second generation sips even less power when idle, offering a claimed 6 months of DeepSleep (up from 180 hours).

Despite regular use, we struggled to completely drain the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 headphones on a week-long vacation in New York – they lasted through both flights, a couple of train rides and random listening sessions throughout the week with ANC enabled at all times. For frequent travelers, the BackBeat Pro 2’s impressive battery life is its killer feature. 

Noise Cancellation

The Pro 2 SE’s active noise cancelling (ANC) technology can put a serious kibosh on an otherwise noisy situation. The cans have saved me from many a loud talker on the New York City subway and helped me establish an island of calm at my desk during work hours. When I wasn’t playing music, the ANC lacked the annoying white hiss that a lot of competing headsets use to keep the outside world at bay.

These headphones were no match, however, for the QC 35 cans and the vacuum-like cancellation those headphones provide. I could still hear most of a conversation taking place in my office with the Pro 2’s ANC, but I could barely make out a word when wearing the Bose.

Performance

With every iteration of the BackBeat Pro, Plantronics is tinkering to get as close to perfect as possible. On the Pro 2 SEs, that means warm audio overall that can be a little muddy at times.

As I listened to Pentatonix’s «Can’t Sleep Love,» my ears were caressed by warm, flowing harmonies with some unexpected oomph on the low end. When the background vocals came in, the soundscape was a bit crowded, but not unbearably so. As is typical with Bose headphones, the same track on the QC 35 cans was cooler, with more balance and precision.

Switching over to Jamiroquai’s «Corner of the Earth,» the Pro 2 SE delivered muddy, aggressive strings alongside clear percussion and vocals. The horns were a bit harsh for my taste, especially when combined with the strings. The QC 35s gave a more balanced presentation; however, that coolness made the sound seem distant.

The bass on Ludacris’ «Grew Up a Screw Up» on the BackBeat Pro 2 SEs delivered that thumping knock that I was looking for, perfectly punctuating the vocals.

Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2: design

Because of its somewhat straightforward nature, you’re likely to either love or hate the design of the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2. The headphones feature a dark brown color palette, which will understandably be a bit polarizing. 

Then there’s the faux wood accent that probably would look more appropriate inside a Buick than on a pair of noise canceling headphones – it looks rather cheap and out of place, but the accents do at least help the headphones stand out from the even-more-generic-looking Bose QuietComfort 35.

As for the earcups, glittery silver mesh rings feature on each, housing the headphone’s noise-canceling mics. The sparkling silver is an odd design choice against the muted browns and blacks, and stick out like a sore thumb. A black mesh would have been more appropriate, but hey – this still works.

On the left ear cup are controls for playback, volume and a toggle for active noise cancellation. The right ear cup has a power/pairing slider as well as a big button for answering phone calls. 

Volume is controlled via a textured ring that rocks back and forth – you rotate counter clockwise to turn up the volume and clockwise to turn it town. The volume control ring is a little harder to grip than the first generation, but that’s a minor quibble and not a particularly noteworthy issue.

Active noise cancellation can be toggled on or off on the left earcup. Turning it off will give you a little bit of extra juice between charges, and we should point out that the headphones still work in wired mode if the battery dies. This toggle also features an open mic mode, which pauses your music and lets you hear what’s going around you without having to take off your headphones.

We found the open mic feature pointless as we could simply take off the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 headphones – which automatically pauses the music – but since you have the same option on much higher-end headphones (like the Sony MDR-1000X), it’s nice to have it included here too. 

The BackBeat Pro 2 headphones come lined with leather around the earcups as well as on the headband, making them extremely comfortable, and we had no issues wearing them throughout an eight-hour flight.

Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 review

Compared to the original Plantronics BackBeat Pro headphones, the Pro 2 are much smaller and lighter (290 grams vs the original’s 340 grams). This is great news for travelers who have limited space and don’t want to be fatigued after long listening sessions. They’re also more compact and lay flatter when folded down for transport, which is another point in their favor.

The headphones come with a soft zippered carrying pouch, which has a super soft lining to protect the headphones from scratches, and a second compartment to store your microUSB charging and 3.5mm headphone cables (a nice touch).

A hard case would have been even better, but again, it’s not really a deal breaker. It should be noted, however, that a hard case is available in the more expensive BackBeat Pro 2 Special Edition, which cost $50 (about £40, AU$67) more and come in a gray color.
