What’s New?

I think as early as now I want to point out that in some ways the PAW Gold Touch (LPGT from here on) is an evolution of sorts rather than a completely brand new DAP. It has plenty of new features and a new design but it also retains some aspects of the original PAW Gold and reimagined them into the LPGT. There is a definite continuity element for previous owners of the PAW Gold.

Touch

Let us start with the obvious. The LPGT moves from the all-physical control set of the original to that of a capacitive touch-based digital media player. This is perhaps the most obvious physical feature and it allows Lotoo to change a number of things on the LPGT to bring it up to competitive par.

Features such as a more discreet level of secondary physical controls, BT & WiFi, 4.4mm balanced, as well as a modern touch-based OS interface that most, if not all users, really demand in this day and age. This is a much deeper and more engaging experience than before.

Lotoo OS

The touch interface now means a new OS and Lotoo are touting this one hard because of the software’s really in-depth sound tweaking capability and outright speed. This is not Android or HiBy, two of the more popular platforms for DAPs. This is their own fully-featured OS with a claimed boot-up time of just 2 seconds compared to Android’s 20-second plus alternative. That is fast!

Flagship DAC

Roll-on 2019 and roll-in a modern flagship AKM DAC chipset, the AK4497EQ. This is the same TOTL DAC being used in both the AK SP1000 and the Cayin N8 with a PCM 768kHz and DSD512 decoding capability fully supported on the LPGT. That is even higher than the N8 and the SP1000’s own decoding limits (DSD256) on the same chipset. You could argue that Lotoo is pitching the LPGT as a long-term bet given those decoding standards.

Leather Case

Inside the accessories and layout is again understated but professionally done. You do not get a huge selection of accessories but what you do get is well made. Of particular note is the dark brown stitched leather case which is immaculately finished with the Paw Gold Touch emblem on the back.

The case fits the Touch like a glove as it should. Well actually, perhaps even too good because I have to find unique ways to get it out of the case. techniques such as pushing via the USB-C slot, sliding with my hand on the screen or pinching the volume guard with various degrees of success. In any event, at this stage what you need to know is that it will not slide out accidentally when brand new.

Media Management

Our initial impressions are that this might be a touch basic in functionality though it does seem to be very bug-free at this point. Firmware could and should update some the media management features to bring it up to par with competing OS’s such as HiBy and Sony’s own software.

You do get a clean home screen with all the immediate categories and playlist creation at the touch of a finger but the drill down is not as complete as I would like it. For example, Artist tagging is 100% accurate on the stuff we tested but on drill down it does not organize by album so you get a flat list of songs. That means if you have a ton of albums from the same artist you might have problems identifying tracks. There is also no Genre tagging which some might like to see in future updates. For now, if you want to drill down by artist and album you will have to go via the Folder search. (Update this will be rectified in the next firmware release from Lotoo)

The software does have some good individual title or song search functionality which is very quick. There is also next to no lagging when scrolling or drilling down. Just how I like it!

Inputs & Outputs

The LPGT has three different analog outputs and one digital input. The analog side includes a 4.4mm/LO balanced and 3.5mm/LO unbalanced output on the top panel and a single USB-C digital input at the bottom.

The two jack ports have dual functionality for both line-out and PO and you can choose between which in the output section of the main settings menu. I do wish Lotoo would throw in a selection warning you that are on LO just to prevent accidentally using headphones or IEMs on full-line out. I fell victim to that twice and it is not a weak line out I can assure you.

The USB-C covers USB-DAC, data transfer and charging the LPGT. It will also allow you to OTG from your phone. What I like about the Touch’s digital audio during OTG or USB-DAC is the ability to tweak the sound with some sound shaping such as XRC, PMEQ, and ATE. You can find out more about these filters in our main sound impressions on Page 3 of this review.

Предупрежу сразу, если у вас осталась только одна почка или нет богатого, любящего вас дяди при смерти — не слушайте этот плеер. Если вам на оба уха не наступил древний мамонт, почти наверняка вы влюбитесь в его звучание, и дальше возможны два исхода. Либо вы пробьёте огромную дыру в семейном бюджете и жена, забрав детей, уедет к маме, либо же все другие плееры в более доступном ценовом сегменте перестанут вас радовать на фоне недостижимой золотой мечты. Paw Gold отличается отменной эмоциональной подачей, без перекосов в какую-либо сторону. Звук весомый, естественный и мощный.

В общем, сейчас я буду этот плеер сильно хвалить. Может быть, вам покажется, что похвалы слишком много, но этот кирпичик действительно умеет играть.

Бас тугой, мощный, но при этом быстрый и очень телесный. Если это запись бас-бочки, вы чётко услышите объём барабана и его расположение. Если это струны контрабаса — вы ощутите их толщину и рассекаемый ими воздух. Атаки отрабатываются превосходно, равно как и затухания. Проработка текстур и разделение НЧ на планы достойно звания эталонного. Отдельно хочу отметить то, что этот плеер умеет выдавать приличные атаки даже на невысокой громкости, с ним отсутствует желание «ввалить погромче».

Средние частоты скрупулёзно балансируют между эмоциональностью и техничностью, выдавая действительно все, что есть в записи. К этой строчке, пожалуй, нечего даже добавить. Это один из тех немногих плееров, который ничего не делает с вокалом при построении воображаемой сцены — не отводит его назад, не выдвигает его вперёд, всё там, где и должно быть. Воображаемая сцена широкая, источники звука на ней позиционируются очень точно, характер инструментов и их размер передаются точно. Глубина очень хорошая, хотя и не рекордная.

ВЧ тоже на уровне с остальной подачей, наконец-то я могу смело написать, что этот источник отрабатывает затухания ВЧ именно так, как надо. «Верха» в его исполнении полны нюансов и легчайших дуновений обертонов. Но тут же кроется и единственный недостаток в звуке этого плеера. Я долго пытался выловить его, чтоб назвать конкретно, но так и не смог. В подаче ВЧ Paw Gold есть какая-то лёгкая неестественность в узком диапазоне частот в районе примерно (очень примерно) 12 кГц

Диапазон этот очень узкий, и многие мелодии просто ничего важного в этой области не содержат, поэтому на них это даже не услышать, но иногда, на редких треках что-то в этом диапазоне звучит немного «не так», есть какой-то след грязи. Может, конечно, я и промахнулся с локализацией проблемного участка, так как делал все на слух

Впрочем, проблема эта встречается нечасто, да и критичной по размерам я назвать её не могу. Хотелось бы, конечно, идеального со всех сторон плеера, но если бы такой создали, все аудиофилы ходили бы с ним (и без одной почки). Думаю, не стоит и говорить о том, что ВЧ идеально сбалансированы, количественно их ровно столько, сколько есть в записи. Плеер тщательно передаёт все недочёты записи, правда, не пытаясь их намеренно подчеркнуть.

Сравнений с другими плеерами на это раз не будет, так как Paw Gold лучше всего того, что я слышал до него.

Selected comparisons

FiiO BTR5 

The BTR5 is another balanced output equipped option in the same price range but packed with a different set of features. The BTR5 supports USB connection and Bluetooth connection, uses dual ES9218P chipsets for decoding while the Lotoo PAW S1 focuses on offering more filtering options to match different scenarios.

When putting them side by side both have a similar small black but well-designed dongle form factor. With a battery inside the BTR5 is superior in driving power and density in sound but you will have to stick to its stock tuning and limited filters.

The PAW S1 is battery-free and sounds more forgiving. You can instantly switch between modes to breathe life into different IEMs which gives it a bit more flexibility.

The experience with these two products is quite different. The PAW S1 is less traditional in purposing whereas the BTR5 has better power. If only the features from both could be merged it would be heavenly.

iBasso IT01 

The IT01 is a lot lighter and cheaper but it does not support digital cable rolling. The build quality and features are far superior on the PAW S1 so also the decoding capability. The PAW S1 has a better resolution and power which in turn delivers a stronger dynamics range in high gain mode.

Flagship Performance:-

The Lotoo Paw S1 is a flagship for the USB DAC’s. It features a high-performance DAC chipset that provides an unmatched sound clarity output. The chipset is inspired by the top of the line DAP range from the brand and boosts similar sound quality output. It features a low distortion value of 0.0004% and a background noise level of -118dBu, the DAC/AMP provides a crystal clear sound output with minutest of the details popping out. It is able to decode PCM up to 32-Bit/384khz, and DSD up to DSD128 natively. Along with a premium high-performance DAC chipset, the PAW S1 uses a standalone AMP chip, OPA1622 that boosts out powerful output with no background noise.

Build Quality

Design

This is a beautifully designed DAP more reminiscent of some fine Japanese engineering than anything that could be classed as cobbled on the industrial back streets of Shenzhen. This is most definitely not a boutique or polarizing form factor.

In some ways, it reminds me a little of some Sony styling with its contoured lines and minimalistic physical button interface to the right side. The aesthetic is dominated by the touchscreen with a reasonably small bezel. It is not HiBy Music R6 Pro small but satisfyingly discreet all the same. That matte black finish does help to minimize any bezel ugliness. I would certainly not want to see a silver version for that very same reason.

Finishing

It is also a very solid and robust DAP and slightly on the heavy side at 311g. Compare that to the N8 at 380g and the Sony 1Z at a mighty 454g then yes it one of the lighter flagships DAPs I have held in a while. However, if you are upgrading from an iBasso DX200 (240g) or a FiiO X7ii (220g) you will feel that additional weight.

A fair bit of that weight is in the material Lotoo have used with an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy chassis that feels quite thick with a solid rather than hollow sound when you tap on it.

I also love how they retained that 24k “Apollo Sun” motif from the original PAW Gold command rocker and reimagined it into a similarly positioned top-mounted analog volume potentiometer.  It creates a very nice contrast to the mostly black finish of the housing. It is especially eye-catching with its “breathing light’ ring just underneath that pulses during playback. You can switch that off, by the way, to save on battery life in the software environmental controls.

Dimensions

The LPGT is deeper than long which makes it a good deal easier to work in one hand. It is just marginally shorter than the new HiBy Music R6 Pro but a lot shorter than the Sony 1Z and positively diminutive up against the Cayin N8. Of all the flagship DAPs it is one of the most compact players at 119mm x 68.6mm x 21mm.

The most noteworthy dimension is the depth of the LPGT. Despite its compact form factor its much deeper than the SP1000 at 21mm compared t0 16.9mm of the AK flagship and the same depth as the volumetrically larger Cayin N8.

Design

The body of the PAW S1 is finely CNC machined from aluminum blocks, weighing just slightly over 27g and is merely 13mm thick. The form factor is pretty similar to a card reader, or a big thumb drive.

On the bottom side, you will find a USB-C socket on one end and 3.5mm/4.4mm balanced jack made by Pentaconn Japan, the same as the ones you see on Lotoo’s higher-end DAPs.

One one side there is a small 1.2” LED screen which shows the current bit rate, gain mode, volume, and Filter selection. You can easily navigate with its buttons on the side and switch instantly between different equalizing filters and gain.

On the right side of the PAW S1, you will find an Fn and +/- buttons which allows you to trigger the control menu and switch between different gain and equalizing modes. There is no “back” button and you will be brought back to the main menu after a few secs if you don’t press any buttons.

The overall build quality is awesome and the feedback on the silicone patched buttons is great. The rounded design and stealthy black color theme are beautifully understated, while the finishing feels quite premium.

Совместимость

К сожалению, начинка плеера не позволила разработчикам сделать его достаточно мощным, чтобы считать его универсальным решением. 75 милливатт на 16Ω явно дают понять, что основные «напарники» этого плеера — наушники-затычки и лёгкие в раскачке полноразмерные наушники. Так что вам придётся учитывать этот факт при выборе наушников для PAW 5000. К счастью, выбор хороших моделей IEM в последние годы — весьма и весьма велик. Плеер хорошо показал себя со многими наушниками, начиная с Dunu Titan всех трёх версий, и заканчивая Trinity Audio Engineering Delta. Главное, что следует учитывать при выборе наушников — собственный вкус, нейтральная подача плеера позволяет особо не задумываться о совместимости. Единственное исключение — совсем уж яркие наушники с редуцированными НЧ.

И, как обычно, несколько примеров

Pantera — Cowboys from Hell. Первый, вышедший на серьёзном лейбле альбом супергруппы. Оригинальный саунд, драйвовые рифы, и интересные мелодии, все то, за что мы любим этот коллектив. С Lotoo PAW 5000 они звучат очень интересно, за счёт детальной СЧ плееру хорошо удаётся передавать агрессию и скорость этой банды.

King Crimson — Larks Tongues in Aspic.

Gerald English London Symphony Chorus & Orchestra — O Fortuna. Пожалуй, самое известное произведение для большого хора в одном из лучших вариантов исполнения. Тоже, пожалуй, произведение, на котором герой обзора может показать себя с лучшей стороны. Детальные СЧ, хороший фон НЧ — именно то, что нужно для правильного восприятия таких записей и вызывания мурашек по коже, которых они достойны. Конечно, придираться к проработке материала можно и тут, но погружаясь в многоголосие хоров, делать этого не хочется.

Battery Life

Despite a fairly chunky 5500mAh Li-poly battery inside the Touch, the rated life-cycle is just ok at 10 hours. It is not Sony levels of 15-20+ hours but slightly edges ahead of the N8’s 8.5-9.5 hours from its huge 7000mAh battery. You can excuse the N8 a little with that Korg NuTube so I can only presume this is related to fairly hefty amp stage inside the Paw Gold and the slightly larger IPS screen.

Lotoo does not mention the test conditions for the 10+ hours so I presume it is lossy decoding with the screen off or low brightness settings and not too much button mashing. I was closer to 9 hours with all my screen poking during our review period with FLAC and closer to 10 with lossy files so the numbers are pretty accurate. Expect those numbers to drop if you are upsampling using the XRC function, Bluetooth, or high-res decoding with the screen on.

В плеере используется всё тот же Blackfin, поэтому прошивки Lotoo создают самостоятельно, и, пожалуй, это идёт их изделиям на пользу. ПО «лапок» — быстрое, весьма стабильное и, на мой взгляд, удобное. Главное меню как таковое в плеере отсутствует, после загрузки (очень быстрой) вы попадаете на экран воспроизведения, и если вы что-то слушали перед выключением, этот файл будет автоматически выбран, вам останется только нажать «Play».

Сам экран воспроизведения может работать в одном из трёх режимов (переключается длинным нажатием кнопки Play): с VU-метром, со спектроанализатором и с обложкой альбома. Первые два режима выглядят весьма эффектно, делая отсылки к технике 90-х и вызывая порцию сожаления о том, что другие разработчики не взяли на вооружение VU-метры (кроме FiiO).

Так как меню в плеере нет, всё управление вынесено на три кнопки, каждая из которых имеет по две функции — для короткого и длинного нажатия. Расскажу про них сверху вниз.

Первая кнопка при кратком нажатии выводит список треков. PAW 5000 Mk II особо не балует медиатекой, тут есть просмотр файлов по папкам на вашей карте, несколько плей-листов, в которые вы можете добавлять треки и список всех медиафайлов скопом для любителей слушать всё вперемешку. Длинное нажатие на эту кнопку может выполнять одну из функций, выбранных в меню (mute, переключение режима экрана и многое другое).

Кстати, о русском языке в прошивке: в моей версии плеера его нет, и с кириллическими названиями треков 5000 Mark II дружит не всегда (хотя латиница с диакритикой показывается нормально, пусть и без диакритических знаков), но Lotoo любят выпускать разные локализованные устройства с разными прошивками, поэтому может появиться и русскоязычная версия.

Последняя кнопка с подписью ATE/PMEQ скрывает одну из главных «фишек» данного устройства. Недаром Blackfin — это процессор, «заточенный» на цифровую обработку сигнала, программисты Lotoo сумели выжать из него многое и оснастили свои плееры рядом цифровых «улучшайзеров» (ATE) и очень качественным параметрическим эквалайзером (PMEQ). ATE позволяют выбрать один из обработчиков («ярче», «мягче» и т. п.), которые будут применены к звуку, эти обработчики сложней банальной эквализации и иногда дают интересный результат. Хотя куда более полезная штука — это всё-таки параметрический эквалайзер. Реализован он тут на уровне хороших «софтовых» решений для компьютера и вполне работает, не портя звук. Естественно, для его настройки придётся порыться в Интернете, чтобы понять общий принцип работы и значение параметров, но не буду лишать читателей радости познания.

Совместимость

Плеер весьма универсален в плане наушников, единственное, с чем он не оптимально работает, — это некоторые чувствительные динамические низкоомы, с ними лучше предварительно послушать плеер, удостоверившись в совместимости. Мне Gold особенно «зашёл» с гибридами Dunu (DN-2002 с ним просто чудо) и наушниками VA-1 от киевского умельца (о них надеюсь вскоре рассказать). Но, разумеется, ими дело не ограничивается. Играючись Paw Gold справляется и с однодрайверной арматурой (привет, «мотики»), и с тугими полноразмерными изодинамами, кроме совсем уж экстремальных моделей. Кстати, ещё хорошо с ним звучат Kennerton Odin, хотя им, конечно, рекомендован полноразмерный ЦАП с усилителем.

Жанрово плеер тотально универсален, тут даже не надо делать скидки на личные вкусовые предпочтения. К качеству записей он чувствителен, но не запредельно, по 10-бальной шкале я бы оценил его на 8.

Как обычно, несколько треков в роли примера

Dire Straits — Private Investigations. Вот чем хороши (помимо самой музыки) Dire Straits, так это качеством записи, иногда их треки звучат так объёмно, что их начинаешь подозревать в использовании бинауральной техники. При этом очень интересно то, что с удовольствием слушать их работы можно на самом посредственном сетапе и получать при этом удовольствие, но для полного раскрытия нужен недюжинного уровня тракт. Данный трек — яркий тому пример, иногда кажется, что он написан специально для тестирования техники, ровно с середины тут начинается парад сложнейших ходов: глубокий мощный бас, внезапные вскрики гитары, перкуссия, трёхмерные эффекты. Я слышал этот трек уже сотни раз, но с Lotoo Paw Gold он раскрылся ещё полнее (простите за этот банальный штамп, но других слов тут не подберёшь).

Eric Clapton — Layla (Unplugged). И ещё один исполнитель, вклад которого в современную музыку сложно недооценить. Не даром наушники от JH Audio носят названия женщин из его песен… Из всех бесчисленных вариантов этого трека мне больше всего нравится «анплаггд», попавший на сборник «Clapton Chronicles». Во многом это, конечно, заслуга звукорежиссёров, записывавших концерт. Объём зала, расположение музыкантов и зрителей — всё это присутствует на записи. Для полной передачи подобных треков необходима великолепная проработка затуханий на ВСЧ и ВЧ, дать которую могут только топовые плееры, и «Золотая лапа» тут раскрывается с лучшей стороны.

The Beatles — I am the Walrus. Этот трек для тестов я взял со сборника Love, содержащего треки, пересведённые заново для выступлений Cirque du Soleil. Композиция очень многоплановая, а ремастер добавил ей трёхмерных эффектов, сильнее разделив трек на «передний» и «задний» планы. Именно этот «задний» план, содержащий порой совершенно удивительные звуки, часто теряется в исполнении плееров попроще, так что Paw Gold и тут показывает себя с лучшей стороны. С ним можно слушать песню, усилием воли, выворачивая её наизнанку как Куб Неккера, то, что было фоном — выходит на передний план, и наоборот. Эффект этот сложно описать, но услышав его один раз, вы сразу поймёте, о чём речь.

Leather Case

Just one thing to mention about the otherwise high-quality leather case. When you put it on initially it is very tight but it will loosen up fairly quickly with repeated use. You may find that when you take it off the first few times that it simply will not budge and it is not easy to grip the top of the LPGT and just pull it out. Neither is it easy to just massage it out via your fingers and screen.

What I did, though I am not wholly recommending it, was to poke the bottom plate via the USB hole at the bottom and push it far enough to grab it at the top and gently massage it out from there. A few more of those should loosen up the fitting to be able to just slide out the LPGT from the base of the screen.

It would also be great if there was an SD card opening at the bottom of the case so I wouldn’t have to pull out the player when I want to change cards. This would save a lot of initial hassles with the case.

Language

Very important, make sure the edition you are buying comes in your spoken language. Currently, Lotoo is only offering the PAW Gold Touch in the language of whichever region is it being sold. There are no multiple language options so please ask your dealer or online store which edition they are selling. This is important for those who like to import hunt for bargains as you may get caught out. I am not aware if a firmware update will resolve this either.

Initial Sound Impressions

I did say Ying to the Yang compared to the N8 because the AK4497EQ DAC at the heart of this player is very neutral, very clean and wonderfully detailed. This is nothing like the tube output of the N8 with its more mellow and well, ‘tubey’ musical sound. Nor is it as aggressive and full-bodied as the N8 so it provides an excellent contrast for me. This is a very accurate and balanced player with a penchant for micro-detail, especially with imaging.

We did a brief test with Anette Askvik’s Liberty which is a superbly recorded album and title-track. The spatial cues with the CA Andromeda were lighting fast, very dynamic sounding and painted over an excellent black background. This is going to be a good pairing with sensitive IEMs by the way, the noise levels are very low indeed.

At this early stage, it is already a safe bet to say the Touch is a reference-class player and I do look forward to testing it more extensively in the weeks to come both with IEMs, headphones and that new USB-DAC features.

Выводы

Думаю, и без заключения понятно, что я считаю Lotoo PAW 5000 второй ревизии лучшим плеером своей ценовой категории. Понимаю, что это достаточно сильное заявление, но имею же я право на субъективные оценки? Небольшие размеры, стильный вид, удобное управление и отличный звук с лихвой компенсируют не самую рекордную автономность, и лично я готов ею поступиться в пользу качественного звучания в столь малом корпусе.
