What are the Sennheiser HD 800 S?

The Sennheiser HD 800 S are the company’s most expensive headphones you can buy off the shelf. No, we haven’t forgotten about the £30,000 Sennheisers Orpheus HE1060, which cost a “small” fortune, but they can’t be found on the high street.

So the £1,199 HD 800 S sound almost reasonable by comparison, and for a very select audience they are.

The Sennheiser HD 800 S take the classic HD 800 and smooth off the treble slightly. It is the precise-but-sharp treble that makes the older flagship such a challenging, yet still world-class, set of headphones. As such, the new version makes for a much more relaxing, if also less eye-opening, listen.

Производитель намеренно не использовал обычные атрибуты дорогих наушников – кожу, дерево, как сделали это Grado и Ultrasonic. Экстерьер полностью создан с нуля, а статус подчеркнут незамысловатостью форм и нестандартным подходом художников.

Чашки наушника лёгкие благодаря использованному при производстве упрочнённому пластику и минимальному содержимому – внутри них только излучатели, защищённые сменной моющейся вставкой от грязи и жирового налёта и прокладки, предотвращающей проникание внутрь конструкции пыли и волос. Динамики ограждены о механических повреждений металлической сеточкой с множеством отверстий для максимального доступа к воздуху и компенсации звука.

Комфорт носки обеспечивает тканевая бархатистая подкладка на амбушюрах и оголовье. Примечательно: она не собирает пыль и волосы, легко очищается. Чашки благодаря размеру охватывают ухо, плотно прилегают к голове при правильной регуляции соединительного оголовья и не вызывают усталости.

Никакой изоляции у наушников нет, поэтому их использовать рационально только дома или в студии, в спокойной обстановке, где ни пользователь, ни окружающие не будут мешать друг другу, создавая взаимно ненужные звуки.

Крепление чаш к оголовью шарнирное, но хорошо фиксируется. К качеству сборки у потребителей вопросов не возникает – никаких люфтов и скрипа.

Кабель вставляется в чаши посредством проприаритетных коннекторов, надёжно фиксирующих провод в чашах. Штекер – отличительная особенность наушников HD 800, производитель подчеркнул, что это основательное устройство, а не мобильное.

Sennheiser HD 800 – плюсы и минусы:

Плюсы:

• Звук главное достоинство Sennheiser HD 800. Это настоящие референсные наушники, которые могут выступать в качестве эталонного образца в любых тестах или обзорах.

• Качественные материалы, которые прослужат возможно даже десяток лет. Немцы собрали модель на совесть. Если что-то придет в негодность, любой материал легко заказать в интернете (по необоснованно завышенной цене, к сожалению) .
• Комфорт это отдельная тема. Несмотря на то что наушники довольно тяжелые, площадь соприкосновения с головой довольно большая. В связи с этим наушники через время постепенно исчезают и остается только музыка. Именно так и должно быть при 100% комфорте.
• Цена. Наушники хоть и стоят очень дорого, по факту они отыгрывают на еще большие деньги, если сравнивать с подобными моделями.

Минусы:

• Это мое личное мнение, но внешний вид, я бы отнес к минусам. Выглядят наушники довольно пугающе и пластмассово. Конечно при близком рассмотрении становится понятно, что материалы качественные, но факт остается фактом. Учитывая то, что наушники будут использоваться в основном дома или на студиях, то дизайн роли практически не играет. Перед кем щеголять то?  
• Мало низов. По сравнению с другими моделями, где бас специально навален, у Sennheiser HD 800 создается впечатление басо-дефицита. Но впечатление обманчиво, так как звук в наушниках натуральный или точно такой какой был на записи. Обманчивое впечатление создается из-за привычки брать за данность, модели с чрезмерными басами.
• Главный и ощутимый минус — это некая отстранённость в звуковом почерке. Даже от «тёплой ламповой» системы они звучат не особо «тепло». Вообще, их звук напоминает арматурный в этом плане. Всё точно, детально, филигранно даже, но иногда «холодно» и редко «вовлекательно». Соответственно, даже если настроить все компоненты системы, чтоб HD 800 играли металл, это будет круто, но не так задорно, «мясисто» и «качево», как многим хотелось бы. И как могут, к примеру, планарные наушники высокого уровня.

Личный опыт

Главное достоинство Sennheiser HD 800 — универсальность. Конечно, лучше всего они подходят для хороших записей классики, камерной музыки, любых записей с живыми инструментами. Но это даже не за счёт их высокой детальности и достоверности, а за счёт очень широкой для наушников сцены и отличной локализации источников звука. В них вполне читается расстановка инструментов по сцене в живых записях. Но и тяжмет «идёт неплохо», и электроника. Недостаток баса — это привычка к его переизбытку.  Впрочем, наушники уже аудиофильские, соответственно, аудиофильские методы тут применимы. И HD 800 можно заставить неплохо «басить», если к ним подобрать соответствующий кабель. Ну и систему.

К слову, в плане «системы», как ни странно, HD 800 тоже весьма универсальны. Конечно, слушать их от какой-нибудь геймерской звуковой карты или айпода — грехЪ , но, начиная с определённого уровня, они играют отлично на любом «тракте», конечно, со своими оговорками. К примеру, пока они были у меня, слушал их с Hi-End портативного плеера (первого в таком классе в своё время), и всё устраивало. Они давали ощутимый прирост в звуке по сравнению с наушниками «левелом» ниже от того же плеера. Но, когда переключаешься на взрослую систему (не вдаваясь в подробности, каждый элемент её (ЦАП, усилитель, межблочные кабели (!)) стоит дороже самих наушников), конечно, эффект другой.  Тут они раскрываются на полную. И уже варьируя элементы системы можно добиться от них почти любого звучания.

Рассматривая их в качестве возможной покупки, обратите внимание на то, от чего их будете слушать. Если у вас есть комплект хотя бы «начинающего аудиофила», то смело можете брать

Только помните, эта покупка повлечёт за собой «апгрейд» и самой системы скорее всего. Кроме того, стоит учесть, что «сочного» и «тёплого» звука от них не дождаться. А вот точного и детального — пожалуйста.

Sound

You’ll need a good quality set-up to get the most from these Sennheisers. We use our reference Naim NDS/555PS as source alongside our trusty MacBook Air loaded with Pure Music software.

Amplification duties are shared between Chord’s excellent Hugo and Beyerdynamic’s hugely capable A1 headphone amp.

It doesn’t take long to realise these headphones are something special. We start with Stevie Wonder’s emotion-packed All Is Fair In Love, and we’re struck by the way these headphones render Stevie’s distinctive voice: it’s beautifully textured, full of dynamic nuance and rendered with body and solidity. The relatively simple musical backdrop is organised with care.

Individual instrumental strands are easy to follow, the HD800S’s innate resolution keeping things nicely separate but never going so far as to lose cohesion.

We move onto Kendrick Lamar’s King Kunta and the Sennheisers sound right at home. That deep, pounding bassline provides a firm foundation for the rest of the music; it’s layered, rich yet as articulate as you like.

Kendrick’s distinctive delivery is reproduced with all the grit it deserves, while the track’s juggernaut of a rhythm powers through, irresistibly.

There’s a small hint of the HD800S’s playing a touch safe – something we noticed to a greater extent on the originals – but it never goes too far.

The energy and sparkle of the music isn’t diluted, instead, this slightly rounded approach helps to give these headphones a good dose of refinement, which prevents even coarse recordings from annoying us too much.

Next up is Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3. Here these headphones show off their insight and delicacy. The music flows with grace and dynamics – both large and small-scale shifts are delivered with skill.

We think Sennheiser has got the tonality of these just right, leaving instruments sounding full-bodied and convincing.

Once again, the headphones’ composure and resolving powers come to the fore as the music’s complexity increases. It’s all kept under control without sounding sterile.

There’s a lovely sense of space to the presentation, something we don’t always associate with headphones.

Sennheiser HD 800 S – Sound quality

The lead benefit of the open design of the Sennheiser HD 800 S is that they sound exceptionally “open”, of course. There’s very little sense that the sound is constrained inside your head; it floats all around you.

This isn’t something that’s on offer in all open headphones. The Sennheiser HD 800 S have an immensely wide, expansive and detailed soundstage, providing a “3D” sound that’s better than what most surround-sound headsets can create.

The effect is involving, and often made it difficult to concentrate on work when the volume was high enough to drown out the clacking of my keyboard.

Compared with most rivals around the same price, such as the Oppo PM-1 and Audeze LCD-3, the Sennhesier HD 800 S headphones sound very large, very epic.

This appears to be a result of the positive side-effects of Sennheiser’s obsession with dynamic drivers, which it uses in virtually all of its in-ear and full-sized headphones. At this price you’ll find numerous planar magnetic and – to a lesser extent – electrostatic sets, which tend to sound somewhat smaller. The Sennheiser HD 800 S’s scale is the equivalent of a set of room-dominating floor-standing speakers.

I’m not at all suggesting that these are bass-skewed headphones, though. The depth and force of the bass is excellent, but if you want any sort of bass dominance, you’ll have to EQ it in. As you’d hope, the Sennheiser HD 800 S headphones aim for balance and fidelity.

The £30,000 Sennheiser Orpheus have weightier bass, but I can’t imagine that anyone is seriously weighing up the merits of the two pairs as a buyer.

I find the hugeness of these headphones their most alluring characteristic in this class, so the most important question is: which are better, the HD 800 or HD 800 S?

Sennheiser has clearly made the HD 800 S to address the one major criticism that was consistently levelled at the HD 800, that their treble can sound a little harsh. This is the tricky part, because the HD 800 effectively turbo-charge their huge presentation with crystalline micro-detail in the higher treble registers. It’s like washing out your ears with menthol, but far more pleasant than that sounds.

However, some people still find the effect a little unpleasant, and the HD 800 S tackle this issue by making the treble normal. It’s far calmer, losing some of its extension into the sort of frequencies that are the privilege of younger ears.

The result is a set of headphones that I can’t imagine anyone disliking. Sound quality is superb, with the only issue being the presentation of the mids, which makes central channel vocals sink ever-so-slightly into the soundstage rather than really biting at your ears.

Для меня уже давно данное направление музыки стало чуть ли не референсным для проверки АС, в данном стиле музыки сочетается многое – музыкальный сигнал во всем диапазоне, вокал, оркестровые «взрывы», отдельно я отслеживаю барабанные партии, так как сам владею данным инструментом.

Композиция – I’m feeling good – Michael Buble, формат – flac 24/192.

Первыми я решил подключить HD 800, сказать, что звук меня порадовал, все равно что ничего не сказать. Наушники прекрасно строят сцену, голос звучит мягко и завораживающе, но при этом можно различить такие нюансы как вибрацию гортани. Классические джазовые проходки на контрабасе слышатся четко, можно услышать звучание остаточной вибрации струны после щипка. Барабаны звучат мягко, без перегруза, а в оркестровых взрывах слышен каждый инструмент, при этом звук не сливается в одну общую кашу. Коллега, которому я дал прослушать данную композицию был зачарован настолько, что потерял дар речи.

Вторыми испытание джазом проходили TH900. Первое, что сразу «бросилось в уши» это перегруз по НЧ-диапазону, барабаны звучали слишком плотно, это же давало искажение на голос. Часть инструментов звучало как из бочки. Голос передавался отчетливо и ясно, но из-за перегруза появлялось большое количество искажений.

Comfort

Their headphones’ weight of 330g is pretty light for this type of product, and the wonderful design of the headband and earpads means these are among the most comfortable full-size headphones we’ve tried.

They’re for domestic use, rather than for going out and about, but they remain stable on our heads despite a relatively light touch when it comes to inward pressure.

And they aren’t overtly showy in the way some rivals can be. Their combination of metal, micro fibre cloth for the ear pads and high quality plastics has resulted in a smart, modern design that feels as if it will last for years of heavy use.

The open-back design means there’s plenty of sound leakage though — in both directions. In our busy office it’s possible to hear the noise going on around us; equally, everyone shares in the fun when we listen to Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off.

The open design also means that our ears don’t heat up anywhere near as much as they do with closed-back rivals, and that’s a good thing.

Sound – Sennheiser HD 820 vs Sennheiser HD 800 S Comparison Review

Low Frequencies

Both the Sennheiser HD 820 and the Sennheiser HD 800 S have slight, subtle boosts in their low frequencies. However, it sounds like their low frequencies have emphasis in slightly different parts of the region. The HD 820 has a boost in the high part of the lows, almost bordering on the low-mids. Conversely, the HD 800 S has emphasis in the lower lows. As a result, both headphones have a similar feel and response to transients and energy in the low frequencies. However, they give precedence to slightly different areas of the low frequency spectrum and different instruments as a result.

For example, when I was listening to MUNA’s song, Winterbreak-Tiesto’s Deep House Remix, the bass synth seemed to have more energy when I was listening to the HD 820. On the other hand, it felt more tucked in and even with the HD 800 S. Likewise, the kick drum seemed to have slightly more length and sub energy when I listened with the HD 800 S.  And although the differences were subtle, the groove of the song felt a little bit different in each can.

Middle Frequencies

Both the Sennheiser HD 820 and the Sennheiser HD 800 S have a high-mid emphasis. However, the HD 800 S has an emphasis that is a little bit higher, bordering the lower high frequencies whereas the HD 820’s is a little bit lower in the high-mids. As a result, vocals sound more natural and brighter in the HD 800 S than the HD 820. For example, in the song Highways and Clouds by Amos Lee, his voice seems to sit more evenly in the mix when I was listening to the HD 800 S.

However, the HD 820’s boost helps melodies in strings, pianos, synths (etc), especially in meaty arrangements, stay on top so they are easy to follow and don’t disappear in the thickness. For example, in the song Moon and Sound by Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette, the piano really has the stage when I was listening with the HD 820. On the other hand, when I was listening with the HD 800 S, the cymbals had much more energy and sometimes would take the attention away from the piano.

High Frequencies

The high frequencies of the Sennheiser HD 800 S have more emphasis than the high frequencies of the Sennheiser HD 820. Both have an impressive sense of extension, but the HD 800 S high frequencies have more energy. These boosted highs are super even so they maintain the same character as the HD 820, whose highs are a light boost but are also quite even, even borderline neutral sounding. For example, in the song Growing Trade by Levon Help, the cymbals are higher in the mix when listening with the HD 800 S. However, with both headphones, those cymbals are long and full of rich harmonics. Both headphones high frequency responses have a very similar vibe, it’s just that the HD 800 S tilts up.

Soundstage

The openness and elevated highs of the Sennheiser HD 800 S lays a blanket of slightly dramatic height over everything. It’s also super wide, expansive, and has a real sense of depth. On the other hand, the Sennheiser HD 820 centers more so in the middle of the height domain, with the height stretching up for particularly high frequency instruments and parts of the mix. The HD 820 has more of a sense of intimacy but still feels wide and expansive when the mix becomes wide and expansive. As a result, it has more contrast in the soundstage which provides emotional impact, even though it does feel quite as deep as the HD 800 S.

For example, in the piece La Mer, L. 111aL II, Jeux de vagues by Claude Debussy, the woodwind melodies sit more in the middle of my head when I listened with the HD 820. On the other hand, they say higher neat my forehead and beyond with the HD 800 S. When the strings come in to aid in the climax, it comes as more of a shock with the HD 820. On the other hand, a sense of width is there for much of the mix with the HD 800 S. The HD 800 S gets its emotional lift there moreso from the change in dynamic than the change in width.

Sennheiser HD 800 S – Design and comfort

Five years ago, I reviewed the original Sennheiser HD 800. The sound blew me away quite unlike any other set of headphones I’d heard up to that point. Looks-wise, however, it was clear that they weren’t going to be to everyone’s taste.

With the HD 800 S, Sennheiser retains the look of the original, but swaps out the silver frame of the HD 800 for a black one. Not afraid of wearing its acoustically inert frame as a proud exoskeleton, there’s a hint of Futurist geometry here that’s far removed from the smooth wooden Audio Technica ATH-W1000Zs, for example.

The Sennheiser HD 800 S reject the reassuringly traditional at almost every turn. Man-made Alcantara (a suede-like material) is used for the padding, an unusual steel weave is used to block off the insides of the headphones from fingers, and the frame is made from an advanced polymer that defies simple classification.

For the most part, this dictates the look. However, it has a slight effect on the comfort too. The padding is fairly conservative for a large “at home” set of headphones, so they don’t end up poking out the side of your head in the way of the Grado PS1000. They are extremely comfortable, particularly for long listening sessions.

The surface area of the pads is large, and the pressure is spread reasonably evenly across the sides and top of your head (a little more on the top). These are fully open headphones, too, so there’s almost zero sound isolation by way of their design.

Anyone sat in the room with you will be able to hear what you’re listening to, and any outside noise is likely to prove distracting. I’ve been using the Sennheiser HD 800 S while working, and the sound of my mechanical keyboard clattering is easily audible through them.

Make sure your home is quiet enough to do them justice, although this applies to any true open-back headphone. They’re not suitable for the office, and the long, thick 3m cable is yet another sign that they belong at home.

The HD 800 S come with a balanced XLR jack cable, made for use with amps with balanced connectors. This cable costs £250 on its own, making the £100 difference between the HD 800 and HD 800 S a non-issue (although it would be good to see a cheaper option that leaves it out).
