Дизайн AK100 выполнен в лучших традициях Hi-Fi, где правят простые формы, обилие металла и, естественно, качественная сборка. Лицевая панель и боковины плеера выполнены из алюминия с фактурным покрытием, тыльная часть — из глянцевого пластика, где кроме крупного названия нового бренда и куда более скоромного упоминания о головной компании и аудиофильской начинке от Wolfson, ничего нет.

Половину фасада занимает цветной QVGA-дисплей, выполненный по технологии IPS. Диагональ экрана – 2,4 дюйма, но благодаря специальной рамке он выглядит больше. Кстати, экран сенсорный.

На верхнем торце размещена пара 3,5-мм разъемов и клавиша включения. Левый разъем – комбинированный, он служит для подключения наушников и для реализации цифрового оптического выхода аудиосигнала. Соседний разъем – цифровой оптический вход. Для подключения AK100 по оптике понадобится кабель с разъемами Mini Toslink (Miniplug), либо специальный адаптер на обычный Toslink. Кстати, подобные гибридные аудио-интерфейсы активно используются в ноутбуках, так что найти такой кабель – не проблема.

На левом торце – три небольших кнопки, заведующие основными режимами проигрывания музыки (переход между треками и пауза/воспроизведение). На нижнем торце – привычный разъем microUSB для зарядки и связи с ПК, а под оригинальной сдвижной дверцей – парочка (!) слотов для карт формата microSD.

Наличие дополнительного слота для flash-карт здесь имеет стратегическое значение. По мнению производителя, в ближайшем будущем именно microSD станет основным коммерческим носителем для музыки высокого разрешения, и такие карты с уже записанным контентом будут продаваться, как некогда компакт-кассеты, или обычные CD. И это здорово, долой громоздкие стойки с SA-CD и DVD-Audio дисками! Только представь, сколько альбомов в формате MQS (Mastering Quality Sound) запросто уместятся в простом спичечном коробке или баночке от бальзама «Звёздочка». Так вот, наличие сразу двух слотов для microSD позволяет не только менять такие карты, как перчатки, но и увеличивает суммарный объем памяти до 96 ГБ (своих «мозгов» у плеера – 32 ГБ).

И, конечно же, стоит упомянуть характерную «фишку» Astell&Kern AK100 – заметное практически с любого ракурса большое колесико регулировки громкости. Этот рифленый кругляшок меняет громкость с такой педантичностью, что для выставления максимального уровня звучания приходится совершить им не один десяток оборотов. Литий-полимерный аккумулятор – встроенный, емкостью 2000 мАч. В заявленные производителем 16 часов автономной работы охотно верится, как я не старался за день разрядить батарею непрерывным воспроизведением официального lossless-альбома Muse «The 2nd Law» на 2/3 громкости, дождаться отключения плеера так и не удалось.

Interface

Astell & Kern AK100

Touch an on-screen button and it can be unresponsive at first, only to react when you repeat the action – propelling you forward through a couple of menus. Faster microSD cards struggle less, but it’s worth noting these issues occurred even with a Class 10 (very fast) card.

Even when not playing DSD files, operation never feels particularly snappy. Scrolling is never smooth, and there tends to be a slight delay between a single tap and the corresponding reaction.

Going from menu to album selection to track selection and back, it’s not unusual to glimpse a countdown. It’s not problematic, but it is noticeable and easily outpaced by the Sony’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system.

Thankfully the interface is straightforward and doesn’t have too many pages to wade through.

The home screen has a settings button and six boxes: Songs, Genres, Albums, Artists, Folders and Master Quality Sound, where you’ll find all your high-res tracks laid out alphabetically.

It’s all very basic, but at least you’ll never get lost.

Features

Nor is the AK Jr sold short in terms of specification. Its Wolfson DAC can deal with high-resolution audio up to 24bit/192kHz and the Jr can support a wide range of file formats, including DSD.

Its 64GB of internal memory is big enough to store plenty of hi-res files, and you can double that up to 128GB by sliding in a 64GB microSD card. And it’s packing Bluetooth 4.0 support, so streaming to suitable headphones or speakers is firmly on the menu.

It is simplicity itself to drag and drop music onto the Jr. Once there it’s accessible through a search by ‘song’, ‘artist’, ‘album’, ‘playlist’ or the seldom-reliable ‘genre’ listings.

Plug in (or wirelessly sync) some suitably capable headphones – the Jr’s impressive 1.95V RMS output promises respectable volume levels – and you’re in business.

Управление плеером построено по гибридной системе, помимо основных «аналоговых» кнопок и регулятора громкости, в твоем полном распоряжении сенсорный экран. После обновления прошивки проблем с фидбэком не наблюдается, все работает как часы. Отмечу лишь, что плеер включается очень неспешно, в течение порядка 10 секунд демонстрируя на экране специальный прогресс-бар.

Оперативно настроить эквалайзер — одно движение по сенсорному экрану

Графический интерфейс не блещет какими-либо изысками, все строго и по делу. Правда, управляющие элементы меню могли бы быть и покрупнее – столярам-аудиофилам для работы с Astell&Kern AK100 придется оттачивать мелкую моторику. С другой стороны, красивости меню – дело сугубо программное, не исключено, что с очередным апдейтом прошивки его оптимизируют.

Очень оригинально реализована настройка 5-полосного эквалайзера. Достаточно провести по экрану нужную частотную «кривую», и плеер автоматом скорректирует звучание. Для более доскональной корректировки АЧХ предусмотрен режим точной настройки отдельно по каждому частотному диапазону. В общем, есть где разгуляться.

Design

Astell & Kern AK100

Next to the Sony NWZ-ZX1’s brass cylinder and protruding back, the A&K actually looks a bit dull. Only the physical controls stand out: playback buttons on the left edge and a volume knob on the right.

This dial rotates with satisfying clicks, but is a bit wobbly. It’s also likely to catch on the fabric in your pocket and change volume. There’s a volume lock option within the menus, but if you use it you’ll have to turn the screen on every time you want to adjust the volume.

There’s a 2.5in capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. It’s big enough to navigate the system, but a bigger screen wouldn’t hurt – it feels cramped against the Sony’s 4in offering.

There is 32GB of storage on board, but you can add more. A small door on the bottom edge slides open to reveal two microSD slots.

Official literature says the device is compatible with cards up to 32GB, but 64GB ones work if you format them using FAT32. That means you can have a maximum storage of 160GB at any time.

We’re disappointed the starting storage space isn’t a little more generous, because unless you have a tiny high-res audio collection you will need more than 32GB. The Sony is maxed out at 128GB, but that’s all built-in and available out of the box.

File support is very good: the AK100 MkII can handle WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3, OGG, AAC, ALAC and AIFF. Unlike the Sony, the A&K is ‘DSD-capable’, which means it can also handle DSD64 files, altough it doesn’t actually play them natively – it converts them to PCM.

Build

Nothing about the way the AK Jr looks or feels speaks of cost-cutting. It’s a slim, tactile slice of aluminium that tapers from 8.9mm to 6.9mm in depth and weighs just 93g.

The 3.1in touchscreen may not be the last word in brightness or sharpness, but it’s responsive and the user interface is logical.

Only the rather pointy corners, which dig into the palm of your hand when you hold the AK Jr, spoil the overall experience.

But you’re not likely to hold it in your hand too much, and it certainly won’t ruin the lining of your jacket like Sony’s beefy NW-ZX2 does when you slip it into your pocket.

Не связанное со звуком «железо» плеера оставили таким же как в старшей модели: 8-ядерный процессор позволяет без проблем тянуть эффектный интерфейс, чем и воспользовались программисты компании, новая прошивка, откатанная на Ультиме, нашла своё место и тут. Большой дисплей позволяет в полной мере насладиться обложкой альбома, а быстрый процессор обеспечивает стильные размытия и другие визуальные эффекты, используемые почти везде в ПО плеера.

После загрузки плеер сразу открывает экран с текущим треком. Тут же отображаются кнопки навигации по треку, название текущей композиции и кнопки добавления в плейлист, просмотра дополнительной информации и управления порядком воспроизведения.

Смахивая пальцем обложку вправо-влево можно переключать треки, а такой же жест в её нижней части позволяет быстро перемещаться на нужную позицию в песне. Нажатие на обложку открывает экран, где её можно рассмотреть крупнее, тут же показывается текст песни, если он сохранён в тегах.

Проведя пальцем от правой стороны экрана влево, вы откроете текущий список воспроизведения, от левого края вправо открывается основная панель с медиабиблиотекой, поиском и настройками. В её верхней части находится поле для поиска треков (один из главных плюсов плееров с сенсорным экраном — клавиатура).

В медиабиблиотеке всё традиционно: альбомы, артисты, жанры, плейлисты, все песни подряд. Отдельные пункты выделены для треков в высоком разрешении, музыки, скопированной с компакт дисков с помощью фирменного граббера и Tidal/Groovers+. Если включена опция AK Connect, в этом же меню добавляется пункт выбора источника музыки и устройства для вывода.

Настроек в плеере не так мало, как кажется на первый взгляд. На экране расширенных опций можно управлять:

• WiFi и Bluetooth
• AK Connect — фирменный протокол доступа к устройствам компании, он позволяет транслировать музыку по сети и считывать её с сетевых хранилищ
• Эквалайзер, как и в старшей модели, к обычному эквалайзеру, позволяющему менять количество определённых частот добавили немного от параметрического (на вкладке Advanced)
• Воспроизведение без пауз
• Режим линейного выхода
• Баланс каналов
• Настройки добавления треков в текущий список воспроизведения
• Управление фирменным CD риппером
• Режим USB (MTP или ЦАП)
• Режим вывода аудио по USB (DoP или конвертация в PCM)
• Включение S/PDIF выхода

Тут же находятся системные настройки: язык, часы, яркость, таймеры выключения, подсветки и сна. Кроме того, плеер отлично умеет обновлять прошивку по WiFi, для чего предусмотрен пункт в том же меню.

What does 24-bit and 192kHz mean?

192kHz

Hertz (Hz) refers to the number of times the sound wave gets measured per second. Files with 192kHz are measured 192,000 times per second. Within the digital audio source, 192,000 points per second represents the number of points connected as one line associated to the signal. This is referred to as the sampling rate.

Sampling rate is the association between resolution and how much information is contained within the music. Bit rate pertains to the dynamic range of a song and clearly expresses the change in pitch and strength of a note.
