Peace Walker Incident

Main article: Peace Walker Incident

In , Big Boss (Naked Snake) and the MSF commissioned doctors Huey Emmerich and Strangelove to create Metal Gear ZEKE. Emmerich supervised the assembly of the frame, and Strangelove oversaw the development of the AI, it was intended to function as an unmanned weapon. Because the MSF was lacking of a defense department level budget, they required that they salvage parts from the various AI weapons. In addition, MSF subcommander Kazuhira Miller and Huey Emmerich were the ones who coined the name. Likewise, the team also had problems adjusting the AI to get it up and running until Strangelove joined ZEKE’s development.

Shortly after ZEKE was completed, Miller suggested that the nuclear warhead recovered from Peace Walker be used to arm the weapon, with the intention of making it a deterrent against hostile countries opposed to the MSF’s fledgling «mercenary nation». Miller also pointed out that this was a good opportunity to arm ZEKE due to the White House being too busy figuring out how to create a cover story regarding the late CIA Station Chief Hot Coldman’s nearly starting an all-out nuclear war. Because of the decision by Big Boss to arm ZEKE with the nuclear warhead, MSF also unofficially became the world’s seventh nuclear power. However, Cipher agent Pacifica Ocean secretly made further modifications to ZEKE, allowing it to accommodate a human pilot, while her KGB ally Vladimir Zadornov escaped the MSF’s custody multiple times, serving as a diversion. Some of the modifications included installing a pilot’s seat inside the AI pod, a dual-control piloting lever for operating the legs, a safety restraint, and a fluid-filled cockpit for shock absorption.

Pacifica eventually hijacked ZEKE, with Zadornov escaping the seventh time as a diversion for her to make off with the weapon unnoticed. Big Boss discovered this shortly after encountering and killing Zadornov in self-defense at MSF’s Mother Base. Proclaiming ZEKE to be the creation of Cipher (the group responsible for the development of the Peace Walker Project), Pacifica attempted to force Big Boss into joining their planned new world order. Big Boss refused, so Pacifica decided to use ZEKE to launch a nuclear strike at the East Coast of the United States, which would cause the public to believe that the Militaires Sans Frontières were an extremist cult. Big Boss was then forced to fight and defeat Pacifica by heavily damaging ZEKE.

After the incident, Strangelove and Huey discussed ZEKE’s fate, and Strangelove revealed that she had made a backup copy of its AI, so at the very least, ZEKE could walk. However, whether ZEKE could continue on or not was up to Big Boss. Big Boss also used ZEKE in a mock battle, upon Huey’s suggestion, in case someone attempted to hijack ZEKE again.

Ground Zeroes Incident

Several days before the UN inspection as well as the rescue of both Chico and Paz (the latter of whom was revealed to have survived their earlier battle), ZEKE’s waterproofing reinforcement had been finished the day before, alongside plans to install the main depth control tank, the compressed air tank, and the altitude control propeller pod two days later, and plans for testing its effectiveness on a seabed 300 feet underwater within the next week should the tests prove positive, with Huey reporting these to Miller and Big Boss, who were more interested and especially irritated at Huey’s sending a letter indicating they changed their minds about having the IAEA inspection at Mother Base. Because of Huey making things happen to the extent that MSF was forced to allow the inspection to happen to not draw suspicion, ZEKE was the only vehicle remaining at the base, albeit hidden from sight at the bottom of the ocean below Mother Base. Mother Base was destroyed when XOF commenced their Trojan Horse operation.

Aftermath

Huey implied that ZEKE had been destroyed by the sinking debris of Mother Base. ZEKE’s role as Outer Heaven’s nuclear deterrent was eventually replaced by the smaller TX-55 Metal Gear. Its overall role, however, was eventually replaced by Battle Gear for the MSF’s successor group Diamond Dogs, with its leader, Venom Snake, privately remarking that he had a sense of déjà vu upon hearing Huey’s proposal.

Stance in the Metal Gear canon

Although Metal Gear Solid Mobile is set between Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2, as well as being announced during the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary party, its stance as being part of the series was often disputed. The game’s events are not acknowledged anywhere else in the series or the Metal Gear Solid 4 Database, and were not included in the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid Collection or Metal Gear 20th Anniversary — Metal Gear Music Collection. In 2010, Kojima Productions confirmed in a podcast on Hideo Kojima’s blog that the only canon spinoff game released up to that point was Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. A man-portable surface-to-air missile launcher that can take out targets that emit heat signatures it is primarily used in the battles against the Hind and Metal Gear REX. Nikita

A remote controlled missile that travels at ground level with a low velocity. Snake uses it to ruin the control panel that is connected to the electrified floor that is preventing him from reaching Hal Emmerich’s lab. It can be used in the second battle as an alternative weapon against Sniper Wolf so that Snake can attack from a safe location.
The player can use the missile’s own CCD camera to guide the missile from its view by looking in first person rather than the overview as well.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)

SPAS-12

The SPAS-12 is a selective-fire shotgun that can either be fired in the normal semiautomatic mode or manual pump action. Originally developed by the Italian arms company Franchi S.p.A., it is a frequently used weapon by the NBC division of the Next-Generation Special Forces, and is unavailable for Solid Snake.

Book

A type of magazine that has girlie pictures. Can be used to distract the enemy by placing it on the ground. Is not available in the original game. Depicts Alexandra Roivas from Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem on the cover as well as the page centerfolds.

Winchester Model 1300 Defender shotgun

A pump-action shotgun. It never actually is a usable item in-game, although it appears in the centerfold pages for the book item in Alex Roivas’ possession, as another reference to Eternal Darkness.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Development

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was officially announced by Konami at E3 2006. Konami stated that the game would be set after Metal Gear Solid 3 but before Metal Gear, would feature online play, and would be released in late 2006. A trailer for the game was released as well. Finally, it was revealed that the game would take place in 1970 and would feature Big Boss as the main character.

In late August, Konami released more details about the game. They stated that the game would feature an online mode and a single-player mode that continued the canon Metal Gear story, unlike the previous PSP Metal Gear games Metal Gear Acid and Metal Gear Acid 2. As the player progressed through the game, Big Boss could recruit other characters to assist him. Each character would have attributes that set them apart from others, such as one excelling in a variety of combat skills. The game would feature FOX and expand on Para-Medic, Sigint, and Major Zero, with their respective voice actors returning. Artist Ashley Wood would be illustrating the game’s cutscenes. Finally, they stated that the gameplay would be more akin to the Metal Gear Solid games than the Acid games.

In addition to the regular trailers, a special trailer known as The Missing Link was released that stated that Portable Ops would explain the reasons why Big Boss formed FOXHOUND, how Big Boss formed Outer Heaven, and why he’d turn against the world he once saved. The trailer also stated that not only would it continue the story of Metal Gear Solid 3, but it also would set the stage for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (MGS4). Kojima echoed similar sentiments in his various commentaries.

The game was directed by Masahiro Yamamoto and scripted by light novelist Gakuto Mikumo, while Kojima served as producer and general manager. In a press release, Kojima stated that Portable Ops‘s story was connected to that of MGS4, and that its completion was necessary for finalizing MGS4‘s story, expressing that changes in one would potentially require changes in the other.

In late November 2006, Ryan Payton stated that Kojima Productions developed the game with a brand new game engine based on the Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence engine. He also stated that the game would feature CQC and the ability to use enemies as shields and that the game would receive a sequel if the game’s response was good. Payton reiterated that playing Portable Ops was essential in order to understand Metal Gear Solid 4‘s story. Finally, he stated that the game wouldn’t receive a PlayStation 2 port if it sold poorly.

In the European version of the game, extra spy missions were included along with a Boss Rush mode.

Gameplay

Unlike the previous games on the PSP, Metal Gear Acid and Metal Gear Acid 2, which were turn-based tactical games with stealth elements, Portable Ops retains the action-based gameplay of the console iterations, drawing heavily from Metal Gear Solid 3 and utilizing the camera system from Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.

The main addition of Portable Ops is the Comrade System. Instead of the solo missions from previous games, Portable Ops uses a squad-based approach, with Naked Snake having to recruit allies to form a team of trained specialists. Before each mission, the player must compose a four-man squad. The squad is then sent into battle. Each member of Snake’s squad has their own strengths and weaknesses. While some units are best utilized on the battlefield, others may specialize in producing items, healing allies, or providing intel for each of the game’s maps.

During gameplay, the player controls only one squad member at a time. Squad members not in use will hide themselves inside a cardboard box, and can be swapped into play when the player-controlled character finds a hiding spot, where they can hide in their own cardboard box. The player uses a different weapon/item equipping system.

Characters who are killed in combat are eliminated from the player’s squad permanently unless they are unique characters such as Snake. Unique characters also include teammates that are bosses or supporting characters in the story. If a unique character’s health is reduced to zero, they are sent to the infirmary, in order to recover. The player can also abort the mission.

A variety of methods can be employed to expand one’s squad. If an enemy is tranquilized or stunned, they can be dragged to a waiting vehicle and captured. After a period of game time, the captured soldier will become a member of Snake’s squad. Also, enemies can be dragged to an ally waiting in a cardboard box, where, through the use of a transeceiver frequency, they will be ordered to transport the enemy for the player, saving stamina. Alternately, by accessing the PSP in certain hotspots using the system’s Wi-Fi feature, soldiers and even special bonus characters can be recruited. The PSP GPS Receiver can also be used for a similar effect. Because some of the player’s recruits include former enemy soldiers, they can walk among the enemy undetected as long as the player avoids doing anything suspicious.

Another new feature is the surround indicator added to the game’s HUD. Similar to the radar in previous games, the surround indicator allows the player to determine the relative proximity of enemies by the noise they make. The surround indicator is composed of two circles; the outer circle displays noises made by enemies and the inner circle displays noises made by the player.

The game also contains a Wi-Fi-enabled multiplayer mode, which is an expansion of the Metal Gear Online mode from Subsistence. One’s performance in Online Mode may affect their performance in the single player campaign; the player can recruit and trade soldiers from defeated opponents or vice versa. Additionally, certain multiplayer options result in recruits being removed from one’s single player roster permanently. In contrast to the console games in the series, the cutscenes are not rendered using the in-game engine. Instead, they are presented using an animated comic style consisting of hand drawn artwork by artist Ashley Wood. This style was previously used in Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel. The game features voice acting, consisting of returning cast members from Metal Gear Solid 3 and new actors. However, the number of cutscenes and in-game voice sections are minimal due to the PSP’s UMD storage capacity constrains.
